I haven't posted in over two weeks, mainly due to the holidays and work. But hey, that's a good thing.
So the Browns lost to the Steelers yesterday 31-0, setting an NFL record for ineptitude in the process for scoreless quarters. Meanwhile being shut out for consecutive games for the first time in their history.
Following the defeat Randy Lerner PHONED Phil Savage to tell him that he had been fired. So basically, Lerner showed Phil the same amount of respect that Savage had shown to players and fans alike. This morning Lerner finally fired Romeo Crennel. Great guy, good coordinator, HORRIBLE head coach.
So Lerner then spoke with Bill Cowher, who promptly told him, “Thanks, but no thanks.” I mean, why wouldn't Cowher want to come and coach this train wreck of a team?
Time to turn our focus elsewhere. Sure Cowher got his start in Cleveland, but who cares. Look what the Steelers are doing without him... Same as they did with him. I think that speaks volumes about the Steelers front office. Start at GM and work your way down!
I live in ATL these days and they hired a nobody coach, (Mike Smith), and look at their turn around! It all started with ownership here in ATL and Arthur Blank. I hate the Falcons, but you have to admire the way they have handled themselves since the Michael Vick and Bobby Petrino happenings. Start with an owner who cares, hire the right people in the front office, get the right group of guys on the field, and a GENERAL for a Head Coach who won't allow players to walk over management or pander to them.
Pioli would be a great hire if Lerner can pull it off. Let Pioli clean house and move next door to his best friend Mark Shapiro. Let him have his hands on the HC hiring decision. If Lerner invests properly in the Browns we will see dividends.
So Cowher is out. He would have been great, but let's think young and long term. Maybe Mangini would be a good fit? He's young (37), he's worked with Pioli in New England. I am not thrilled with him as a choice, but with the right front office you could put Gomer Pyle on the filed as HC and win. (okay, maybe that's a stretch - but you get my point) The Steelers pulled Mike Tomlin from thin air and look how he is managing things in Pittsburgh. That’s what we need after a good front office, a good on field manager.
Yet another next year and more rebuilding. Yeah!
